About

Research and teaching in international and global history is a major professional commitment of numerous faculty members and graduate students at the Harvard History Department.

International and global history studies historical phenomena and relationships that cross or transcend conventional national or regional boundaries. The field has a long and distinguished tradition, but it has expanded rapidly in recent years as our growing awareness of global and transnational connections, interactions, and entities reconfigures our view of the past.

The study of international and global history at Harvard is broad ranging. It is concerned with questions of war and diplomacy; international poltical economy; empires and nations; the role of international organizations, NGOs, and other non-state actors; flows of people, commodities, or germs; and the transnational diffusion of ideas, ideologies, norms, images, and practices.
